The evening the light went out
This is the sky of Genesis 3, dusk over the west gate. Its first drawn figure is the Serpent, the whole crooked line of it, from the garden's question to the promise of the crushed head. The bright Seed-star strikes from above. The gold stars open this scene's word studies: the guards, the exile-verb, the covering, and her seed.
Because Scripture itself draws this figure, and draws it of people as often as of snakes. The subtil beast of the field, Dan the serpent by the way, Pharaoh the river-dragon, the brood of vipers, that old serpent of Revelation 12:9. One poetic family, and the word pages keep each member distinct. Above its head sits one bright star: the promise that began in this very chapter. (The figure is our own invention.
