The heavens declare
This is the night sky of Genesis 1, the first of four. Every key word is a constellation. Its stars are the verses where Scripture uses that same word, joined the way the old star-maps joined Orion. Twenty-two key words are mapped here, in fifteen figures. Some figures carry more than one word. Here they are: the Staff of Bara sweeping the whole sky, the Vault and the Deep in the north, the Sheaf and the Shoreline, the Dragon and the Flock, the Firstborn's Line and the Signet, the Orchard Rows, the Lampstand, the Scales, the First Flame, the Sundial, and the Throne of Rest. Because verses share words, one star can belong to more than one figure, and to more than one sky. Sunrise, dusk, and dawn all interlock with this one. Rest on any star and its verse opens. The bright gold stars open their word studies.
Because in Scripture's own hands the stars are covenant pictures. Lights "for signs and for seasons." A promised family counted in stars. A boy's dream where the sun, the moon, and eleven stars bow. Day 4 gave us this map. The figures themselves are our own invention, drawn the way the old atlases drew Orion. The star positions are art; the connections are Scripture's. And Scripture draws people as stars itself: "they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever" (Daniel 12:3).
